Complex ICF
Structural Shell in Scotland
This striking contemporary home demonstrates the versatility of the Izodom ICF building system, supplied and installed by Econekt. Designed around large open spaces, extensive glazing and a highly architectural roof structure, the project required the ICF, structural steelwork, floors, roof and glazing to work together as one carefully coordinated structural envelope.
At the heart of the build is the Izodom Insulated Concrete Formwork system, combining a reinforced concrete core with continuous insulation to create a strong, highly insulated and airtight external structure. Econekt is the exclusive UK partner for Izodom, with systems available for low-energy and Passivhaus construction. The project highlights how ICF can be used well beyond conventional house forms, accommodating substantial structural openings and complex architectural detailing.
One of the defining features of the property is its extensive use of structural steel and large-format glazing. Full-height glazed elevations, dramatic corner glazing and roof glazing create open, light-filled living spaces, while the steel frame enables the wide spans, projecting upper structure and architectural roof forms. Close coordination between the ICF walls, steelwork, floor construction, roof and window openings was therefore critical throughout the structural build.
The Econekt supply-and-fit approach provides much more than the delivery of ICF blocks to site. Their structural-shell service can bring together the Izodom system with associated floors, roof structures and other key elements, providing a coordinated route from the structural design through to a low-energy shell. This approach is particularly valuable on complex projects where interfaces between different construction systems need to be considered from the outset.
The result is a highly engineered structural shell that demonstrates the flexibility of Izodom ICF and Econekt’s specialist installation service. The project combines the strength and thermal performance of ICF with ambitious contemporary architecture, creating the foundations for a distinctive, low-energy home without restricting the architect’s design.
